Consider Representing our Students with Disabilities in Arlington!

3 Dec By SEPTA Admin Leave a Comment

Arlington SEPTA members and other parents/guardians and staff members — please consider extending our voices for students with disabilities by joining advisory groups, committees, and councils, to use your own voice!  Let’s try to have coverage (ideally voting members where there’s a distinction) on all of the following:

  • ASEAC:  we love ASEAC, and work closely with them; it’ll be even easier with more cross-over, if we have a few parents/guardians who are ASEAC members! (Application link here.)
  • Budget Advisory Council (BAC):  when the APS budget is discussed, you can watch out for our SWD’s. (Application link here.)
  • Facilities Advisory Council (FAC):  you can help provide reminders of what SWD’s might need in building construction and renovations. (Application link here.)
  • Advisory Council on Teaching and Learning (ACTL):  Has your school’s PTA or principal appointed a representative to ACTL yet for this year?  If not, you could ask to represent your school and be a voice for SWD’s when needed. (Ask your PTA first, but if your PTA is less active or does not send representatives, please ask your principal — every APS school is entitled to a voting representative!)
  • ACTL subject-matter subcommittees, many of which still could use more parents/guardians, staff members, and/or high school students who are ready to serve. (Application link here.)
    • Career, Technical, and Adult Education  ****    Dual Language Immersion   ****   Early Education; Educational Technology   ****  English Language Arts
    • English Learners   ****   Mathematics   ****  School Health Advisory Board (SHAB)   ****  Science   ****  Social Studies   ****  World Languages
    • Student Services (SEPTA Advocacy chair, Dana Milburn, also chairs this committee and would welcome more members & can brief on work)
  • Your PTA or PTSA — it’s a fantastic way to make sure SWD’s are represented in the school community!
