The Mighty

12 Sep By Caroline Levy Leave a Comment

Caroline&Adam

I don’t spend a lot of time reading blogs.  Every now and then, a post rolls past me and grabs my attention.

Here is one from The Mighty that really spoke to me.  In this story a mom tells the story of her early playgroup, one she started to feel excluded from.  Has this happened to you?  It happened to me.  It happened so gradually that I didn’t notice at first. But I’ll never forget comments like, “You are so lucky, your child will never grow up and leave you” or later on, “The bus that picks up the special kids takes forever to load”.

The words that spoke to me in this blog were these,

“Our first job is to advocate for our child as we want them to advocate for themselves. This is hard. This will not come easily. But it, like any other skill you practice, will come.

I urge you to not feel like you need to answer every issue right away — or even at all. I encourage you to move outside of your comfort zone for love, support and friendship. Find your community, but do not segregate yourself.”

If you have joined Arlington SEPTA you are on your way to finding your community.  Not the only community you’ll have and need, but one that will understand your educational, emotional and social ups and downs.  Welcome.
