Join Arlington SEPTA as we explore what’s new at APS including:
- Updated Student Support System
- Standards-based report cards and reporting
- Overview of ASEAC
- Events from the PRC
Meet Heather Rothenbuescher, who serves as a Special Education Supervisor in the Office of Special Education. Heather is also currently supporting secondary special education at the district level along with Dr. Kelly Krug, who is supporting special education at the elementary level. Heather will walk us through the new Student Support System designed to streamline the process for seeking support for students’ academic, social-emotional and behavioral needs. Learn how students are referred to a Student Support Team starting with the parents or the school.
Hear from Sarah Putnam, Director of Curriculum and Instruction,
about the expansion of APS’s standards-based instruction, grading and reporting system. Piloted at three elementary schools last year, standards-based grading is now being utilized by eleven elementary schools. Standards-based instruction focuses on what students understand and standards-based reporting does not utilize traditional letter grades.
We will also be joined by Nadia Facey with the Arlington Special Education Advisory Committee (ASEAC), which reports and makes recommendations to the school board and gives parents an opportunity to have a voice in the way APS provides services to students receiving special education supports. Kathleen Donovan and Kelly Mountain from the Arlington Parent Resource Center (PRC) will also touch on what’s new for parents this year at the PRC.
